Since 1994 Nieto has been a civilian employee at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. In 2001 he began displaying various decals on his vehicle expressing sentiments such as “Remember the Cole, 12 Oct 2000,” “Islam=Terrorism” and “We Died, They Rejoiced.”
On July 31, 2008, two military police officers ticketed Nieto for displaying “offensive material.”
I find several of these to be offensive but have no problem with people displaying them because everyone has an opinion and I don't have to agree with all of them!!! What a novel idea!!
I don't like the Islam=Terrorist that he originally had b/c that smacks too much of labeling a group with the actions of a few. I don't like the nude silhouettes b/c, well, no one should be subjected to filth (and, yes, I do think it is filth and demeaning to women). The comment about "Your child may be an honor student but your driving sucks" is mildly amusing but only b/c the whole honor student bumper stickers are obnoxious. The darwin fish is sick—do people really believes we evolved from pond scum? Who wants to trace their ancestry back to green slime? Puh-freaking-lease! But I would NEVER presume to say "You can't have that on your vehicle b/c it offends me."
Has our country gotten so childish? Whatever happened to freedom of speech? When will they come for the gossips because they are always offending someone!
